Minnesota Colleges With Law Enforcement Programs

Minnesota, famous as "the land of 10,000 lakes," has about 100 colleges and universities. Students who want to prepare for a career in law enforcement have many options to further their education at colleges in Minnesota. Many institutions in the state offer a bachelor's degree programs in criminal justice or other majors related to law enforcement.

    • Concordia University, St. Paul is a private Lutheran liberal arts university with a 37-acre campus in Minnesota's capital city. Its Department of Criminal Justice was created in 2001 and caters to students who are also working. The department offers a criminal justice bachelor's degree that can be completed in traditional classrooms or online, as well as an online criminal justice master's degree program.

    Southwest Minnesota State University

    • Southwest Minnesota State University is a public four-year liberal arts university. The Social Science Department at SMSU offers a Bachelor of Science degree in justice administration and a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in law enforcement administration, as well as a criminal justice minor. Students in the four-year law enforcement B.A.S. degree program also earn an associate degree in law enforcement administration after completing their second year.

    Winona State University

    • Founded in 1858, Winona State University is the oldest public university in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System. WSU offers a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology / criminal justice. Students in the major can select a specialization track in law enforcement or corrections; or can specialize in both areas. The program includes a 12-credit internship in students' specialization. Students pursuing both tracks must complete two internships. WSU has an enrollment of 8,600 students.

    St. Mary's University of Minnesota

    • Founded in 1912, St. Mary's University of Minnesota is a private Catholic university. SMU offers a bachelor's degree in criminal justice with a law enforcement track. Designed mainly for students who wish to become local, state or federal law enforcement officers, SMU's program includes an internship and is certified by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training. As of Fall 2009, SMU had a total of 5,565 students.

    Hamline University

    • Founded in 1854, Hamline University is the oldest university in Minnesota. Hamline is also private and affiliated with the United Methodist Church, and has facilities in both St. Paul and Minneapolis. Hamline's College of Liberal Arts offers an undergraduate major and minor in criminal justice, as well as a wide variety of opportunities for internships, research and networking with law enforcement agencies in the Twin Cities area. Almost 4,900 students are pursuing undergraduate, graduate or law degrees at Hamline.
