The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University offers a program for students to become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Admitted students must complete a prescribed professional curriculum that lasts four years. Students also complete a clinical training during summer of the last year of study. Admission to the program is very competitive; students should be prepared to describe their experience in veterinary, medical research, agricultural or human health settings. Applicants must also have completed courses in biology, chemistry and physics, among others, before applying to the school.

The Equine Health Studies Program at Louisiana State University allows students to earn master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees in veterinary medical sciences. The equine program is focused on serving the $2.45 billion equine industry in Louisiana. Courses include Diseases of Horses, Critical Care and Veterinary Anesthesia, among many others courses. In addition to coursework, students will conduct practical training at the program's state-of-the-art equine hospital. Students may also pursue opportunities such as equine surgery internships or the equine internal medicine residency.

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University offers a doctoral program in veterinary medicine. The program is a four-year degree track that is carefully designed by the school. Students take courses in topics like Veterinary Practice, The Animal Body and Animal Health and Disease, among other subjects. In the third and fourth years of study, students conduct supervised clinical work in the Cornell University Hospital for Animals. As part of the practical work, students are trained in animal medicine, animal surgery and emergency and critical care medicine.
