This veterinary school is located in in Ithaca, New York. Students attend courses on cell biology and genetics, function and dysfunction, the animal body, and animal health and disease. A total of 355 students currently study toward a post-baccalaureate Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in a four-year program, and 100 are enrolled on Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy programs, as of 2011.
The College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences is comprised of four departments: Biomedical Sciences; Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology; and Environmental Health & Radiological Health Sciences. Most important for veterinary students is the Clinical Sciences department at the heart of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program. Students embark on a four-year course to achieve this degree; the first two years comprise of both practical and clinical studies on the main campus. The second half of the program trains students in Veterinary Teaching Hospital, where they evaluate animals and create treatment plans under faculty supervision.
The school offers a four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program, with 524 students attending: 24 students attend the Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine program as of 2011. Students can choose from 32 specialties. A total of 5,382 students have graduated from the school with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree since it was founded in 1948. Faculty and staff on the veterinary program treat over 30,000 animals annually at the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, as they pass on their knowledge to veterinary students.
Since the school was founded in 1887, it has graduated almost 6,000 veterinary students. The four-year graduate program has 440 students enrolled. The school is also committed to research, with over 260 research programs in operation as of 2011. Departments include animal biology, pathobiology and two clinical studies departments, one at Philadelphia and the other at the New Bolton Center in Kennett Square. Students embark on five to six year combined courses leading to a Veterinary Doctor of Medicine degree.
