New York Colleges for Ceramic Engineering

Ceramic engineering is a specialized field within the discipline of materials science. Here, the term “ceramics” refers to inorganic, often artificial, materials constructed at the molecular level that engineers then use in building, electronics, defense systems and automotive and environmental technology. Future engineers can study in one of the nation’s few degree-granting ceramic engineering programs , or specialize in ceramics while earning an undergraduate or graduate degree in materials science. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the number of job openings to roughly equal the number of graduates in this field through 2018.
  1. New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University

    • New York’s Alfred University offers one of the nation’s only undergraduate degrees in ceramic engineering. Since 1900, students have studied traditional ceramic manufacture at Alfred University, and in 1948, the university formed a partnership with the State University of New York (SUNY) to increase educational offerings. Now, the Inamori School of Ceramic Engineering and Materials Science at Alfred enrolls both undergraduates and graduates in bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degree programs in ceramic engineering. Through partnerships with industry and government bodies, students actively engage in research to complement their classroom training. Undergraduate degree requirements include courses in engineering, physics and mathematics, plus 47 credit hours in materials science and eight additional credit hours specifically in ceramic engineering. Alfred University’s Materials Science program ranks in the nation’s top 20 for this field and according to their website, more than one-third of America’s practicing ceramic engineers earned at least one degree from Alfred University.

State University of New York Stony Brook

    • Students enrolled in the engineering programs at SUNY Stony Brook can study ceramic engineering as part of their degree in materials science. Undergraduates can earn a bachelor’s in engineering science, while graduate students can receive a master's or a doctorate in materials science and engineering. Candidates in their doctorate program can complete their research in industrial materials at the student’s current job in the field of materials science. All programs combine classroom learning in the sciences with research often performed in collaboration with local and national-level industries.

    Columbia University

    • Students can pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in materials science at Columbia University, working toward a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate in materials science engineering. While enrolled, pupils can tailor their research and classroom work in ceramics and candidates for a doctorate can focus on ceramic engineering to earn a specialized certificate in solid-state science and engineering. All programs combine classroom learning with laboratory research.

    University of Rochester

    • Graduate students can work toward a master’s or a doctorate in materials science at the University of Rochester. Rochester’s flexible program allows students to complete research in a specialized field in any one of the engineering disciplines, including ceramics. Although Rochester’s interdepartmental approach does not assign specific classes, master’s candidates must complete 30 credit hours, or 20 classroom credit hours plus 10 credit hours research, and those seeking a doctorate must complete 32 classroom credit hours and 58 credit hours of research.
