    • The best nursing program in the state of Alabama is located in Birmingham at the University of Alabama--Birmingham (UAB). U.S. News and World Report ranked nursing programs nationwide in 2007 and UAB was ranked number 26. One aspect of the program that sets it apart from other nursing programs is its AIDS and health administration program that U.S. News and World Report recognized as one of the best in the country. UAB offers degrees at all levels from the bachelor's through the doctorate. It is the only nursing program in Alabama to offer the research-oriented Ph.D. The program further offers the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. Many of the nursing courses offered by the school are available as online courses as well.

    University of Alabama

    • The second highest rated nursing school in the state of Alabama is the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The university's college of nursing was ranked 95th in the nation according to the U.S. News & World Report rankings for 2007. The University of Alabama offers both a Bachelor of Science (BSN) and Master of Science (MSN) degree in the field. Students can also go on to finish their nursing education by completing the DNP degree as well. One of the distinguishing characteristics of the Tuscaloosa program is its doctorate degree in nursing education. This degree can be pursued alone or in conjunction with the MSN degree.

    • The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is another one of the state's nationally ranked nursing programs. Ranked number 115 by U.S. News and World Report, UAH also offers degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including the DNP degree. Like the Tuscaloosa program, UAH also offers the Doctor of Nursing Education. It too offers joint-degree programs including the MSN in conjunction with either a Master of Arts degree or the education doctorate.
