Schools That Have Juris Doctor Programs

Students who wish to become a practicing lawyer must first earn a Juris Doctor degree from a university or college school law school. The Juris Doctor degree is a graduate degree that usually takes three years to complete. While hundreds of universities and colleges throughout the United States offer a Juris Doctor degree, students can explore law schools for concentrations and locations that match their career goals.
  1. Yale Law School

    • Located in Connecticut, the Yale Law School offers a degree of Juris Doctor. Students must complete 83 total units. After the first term, students are allowed to design their own individual curriculum with only a few minor restrictions. Courses include Civil Litigation Practice, Comparative Constitutional Law, Green Energy Policy and History of the Common Law, to name only a few possibilities. Admissions are very competitive. Each year the school receives over 3,000 applications, but selects only about 200 students. Graduates of the Juris Doctor program have found careers in teaching, public practice, private practice, government and business.

    Harvard Law School

    • Harvard University offers a Juris Doctor program. During the first year, students take courses in criminal law, civil procedure, contracts, legislation and regulation, torts and property. After the first year, students are encouraged to explore courses which fit their interests and career goals. Students can take part in reading groups of 10 to 12 students who gather for conversation and readings on topics of personal legal interest such as climate change or bioethics. Prospective students can attend information sessions held throughout the country prior to the application deadline in the fall.

    Stanford Law School

    • Stanford Law School offers a three-year Juris Doctor program. During the first year, students follow a basic curriculum, including topics such as legal institutions, case analysis, legal reasoning and judicial decisions. Upper division courses include Advanced Criminal Practice Deal Litigation Seminar Mediation and Water Law and Policy, among many other interesting subjects. Admissions are extremely competitive. Each year, about 4,500 prospective students apply while only 170 are accepted. Admitted students can participate in the law school's clinics, law reviews, student organizations or other student support opportunities.
