List of Colleges Best for Computer Engineering

Many top research universities offer undergraduate programs in computer engineering. Students typically work toward the Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in electrical engineering, computer engineering or computer science. Many schools also offer a five-year dual degree program leading toward the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees.
  1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Engineering

    • The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, commonly referred to as MIT, was founded in 1861. As of 2009, this private research university had about 4,200 undergraduates. The MIT department of electrical engineering and computer science offers three majors for undergraduates, including electrical engineering, computer science and electrical engineering and computer science. The department emphasizes the study of theory within each major. All students must complete two required introductory courses before selecting a major, and all students must complete a senior project on a specific area of interest. Students work toward the Bachelor of Science degree, and can apply to enter the combined bachelor’s and master’s degree program, which requires only one additional year of study after the four undergraduate years. The program accepts most students with at least a B average. In 2009, “U.S. News & World Report” ranked MIT first among undergraduate engineering schools and first in the computer-engineering field.

    University of California at Berkeley

    • The electrical engineering and computer sciences department at the University of California at Berkeley’s College of Engineering offers several programs for undergraduates. Students can major in electrical and computer engineering or computer science engineering. Electrical and computer engineering majors can choose to concentrate in electronics, computer systems or communications, networks and systems. College of Engineering students in both of these majors work toward the Bachelor of Science degree. Students in the university’s College of Letters and Science can major in computer science, but they work toward the Bachelor of Art degree rather than the Bachelor of Science degree. The department also offers minors in electrical engineering and computer science and computer science. Undergraduates can apply to enter the five-year bachelor’s and master’s degree program. In 2009, “U.S. News & World Report” ranked UC Berkeley second among undergraduate engineering schools and second in the computer-engineering field.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Engineering

    • The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign offers several undergraduate programs in the department of electrical and computer engineering. Students can work toward the Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering or electrical engineering. All first-year students must take the Introduction to Electrical and Computer Engineering course with a focus on theory and laboratory work. Students in both majors must also complete general education course requirements in the humanities and social sciences. Motivated students can apply to the James Scholar Program, which allows students to participate in honors seminars and undergraduate research symposia. In 2009, “U.S. News & World Report” ranked the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign fifth among undergraduate engineering schools and third in the computer-engineering field.
