Consistently ranked as one of the top five art and design schools, the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) offers 16 undergraduate degree programs in a wide variety of subjects. Subjects at the school include apparel design, architecture, graphic design, and illustration. "U.S. New & World Report" ranks RISD's graduate program as the number one master of fine arts program in the country. Rhode Island School of Design began in 1877 and currently consists of 350 faculty and curators. RISD has its own museum composed of five buildings that house a collection of more than 84,000 pieces. Yale's school of art encompasses drawing, film-making, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. According to "U.S. News & World Report," in 2008 Yale ranked as the number two university for graphic design and sculpture and number one for painting, drawing, and photography. Yale University is made up of three components---Yale College for undergraduate work, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the professional school. The professional school includes the schools of architecture, art, and drama and the institute of sacred music.

"U.S. News & World Report" ranks Cranbrook Academy of Art the number five art school for sculpture, number seven for printmaking, number 10 for photography, number 10 for painting and drawing, number six for metals and jewelry, number seven for industrial design, number two for graphic design, number one for fiber arts, and number two for ceramics. Cranbrook is a graduate school only and does not offer undergraduate degrees. Cranbrook has an extensive list of famous instructors, including Eero Saarinen, Charles Eames, Daniel Libeskind, and Jun Kaneko. The academy's programs feature 10 artists-in-residence, each overseeing one of the school's departments, which consist of 2D design, 3D design, architecture, ceramics, fiber, metalsmithing, painting, photography, print media, and sculpture.
