Founded in 1805, the University of South Carolina (USC) is based in Columbia; however, there are three satellite campuses in other parts of the state. With a main campus enrollment of over 27,000 students, the university employs roughly 1,600 full-time faculty, according to the university's website. USC's School of Education is home to the Department of Instruction and Teacher Education, which houses the early childhood education degree programs. USC offers three different early childhood education programs, all of which are accredited by the NAEYC. Located in Greenville, Clemson University ranked as the 22nd best public university in the nation in 2010, according to U.S. News and World Report. Home to roughly 13,000 undergraduate students and 2,000 graduate students, 16 percent of undergraduate students received financial assistance in the form of grants and scholarships. Within the Eugene T. Moore School of Education, students can pursue a degree in early childhood education. This program prepares students for teaching positions from pre-kindergarten to third grade and is accredited by the NAEYC.

The College of Charleston, located in downtown Charleston, was founded in 1770. The school is home to students from all 50 states and 68 different countries and has an enrollment of approximately 10,000 as of 2010. The College of Charleston offers over 100 majors from which to choose. The early childhood education program intertwines time in the classroom with fieldwork, where students get first-hand experiences working with children. The program is accredited by both the NAEYC and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
