Biomedical Universities in the USA

A biomedical engineer is tasked with the responsibility of creating and analyzing health products such as medical systems, artificial organs and prosthetics. Biomedical engineers may be employed by health care research companies, hospitals, medical equipment manufacturers, governments and pharmaceutical companies, earning an average annual salary of approximately $77,400, according to the United States Department of Labor. Becoming a biomedical engineer takes advanced education and specialized training, offered through biomedical engineering departments at universities across the country.
  1. Duke University

    • The Duke University Biomedical Engineering Department offers both an undergraduate and doctoral program in biomedical engineering. Students may be interested to know that Duke's program was the first undergraduate biomedical engineering major accredited by the Engineering Council for Profession Development. Students in the undergraduate program take courses in physics, chemistry, biology, life-science, statistics and computational methods, plus required general education credits. Internships at local engineering firms and national companies are available. Doctorate students may opt to complete a thesis project or take elective courses, plus participate in research seminars and take advanced math courses. All PhD candidates must complete two semesters as teaching assistants in the biomedical engineering department.
