Aeronautical Universities in the USA

Aeronautics involves the study of aircraft and the methods used in their design and construction. The field has evolved over the years to include not only traditional flying apparatuses but also those used in space travel. Aeronautics is also known under the titles of aerospace studies and astronautics. Degree programs are offered worldwide, including programs in the United States.
  1. Purdue University

    • Purdue University's College of Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate engineering studies in its School of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Bachelor's degree candidates can specialize in aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics, controls, system design, propulsion, and structures and materials. Master's degree candidates can specialize in many of those options plus aerospace systems design and astrodynamics and space applications. The school offers a combined bachelor's-master's degree program and the option of distance education at the graduate level. Undergraduate applicants must meet the general university requirements plus department requirements in class rank, grade point average in college prep courses and test scores. Admission at the master's level requires a grade point average of 3.2, and a 3.5 grade point average is necessary for admission to the doctoral program. Purdue's College of Technology also offers a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering technology. Courses include basic aircraft powerplant technology, aircraft electrical systems and aircraft maintenance practices.

    California Institute of Technology

    • California Institute of Technology, or Cal Tech, offers a program in mechanics: fluids, solids, biosystems, and space within the graduate Aerospace Laboratories department. Students interested in obtaining a master's degree may pursue either the aerospace or aeronautics option. There is also a dual degree option with Ecolé Polytechnique, a French institution, as well as a doctoral degree option in aeronautics; courses include fluid mechanics and methods of applied mathematics. Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in applied science, engineering or science. The department also offers an undergraduate minor in aerospace.

    San Jose State University

    • San Jose State University's Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department offers studies at the bachelor's and master's levels. Courses include aerospace structures, aerodynamics, spacecraft design and astrodynamics. The programs are designed to prepare students for a number of fields, including aerodynamics, aircraft and/or spacecraft design, and propulsion. The department also offers three certificates for those interested in obtaining more education in one particular aspect: Embedded Controllers, Industrial Design and Product Development, and Database Systems Management and Computer Networks generally can be completed in seven classes or less.
