You need the proper training to pursue a career in this field, and you need a background in biology. Different universities throughout the country offer biotechnology training and degrees.     • The Pennsylvania State University's the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences offers a Master of Biotechnology degree, which is a multi-disciplinary degree. You learn about the fundamentals of biotechnology, including scientific principles and legal and social issues. You also learn the laboratory techniques that you need for biotechnology research and applications, and you can choose from one of three concentrations: medical, diversified track or agriculture. You must also take an internship. The school only admits a small number of students to this program each year. Generally, you can finish this program within one-and-a-half years.

    Georgetown

    • The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular and Cellular Biology at Georgetown University offers a Master of Science degree in biotechnology, which is a 30 credit program. This course only takes one year to complete if you go full time. You learn about the effects of biotechnology on society, and you learn these concepts both in the classroom and in a lab. You can also take an internship in different fields, including at government agencies, biotechnology companies, non-profits and law firms. Coursework includes biochemistry core concepts, radiation safety, fermentation and intellectual property. You must also take 15 credits of electives. This is a multi-disciplinary course.

    • The University of California Berkeley Extension offers a Sciences, Biotechnology and Mathematics program of study. This program is mainly for college students who want to pursue an advanced degree or for biotechnology professionals. The goal of this program is to bolster your science background, especially when you want to obtain medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry or nursing advanced degrees. You can take classes in calculus, chemistry, biology, statistics and analytic geometry. You can take these classes online or at the following classroom locations: Berkeley, Belmont or San Francisco.

    University of Maryland

    • The University of Maryland University College's Master of Science in Biotechnology Studies specializes in biotechnology for bio-entrepreneurship, bio-defense, informatics and information technology. You can concentrate in one of three areas: biotechnology management, bio-informatics or bio-defense and bio-security. The goal of this program is to teach you about the technologies used in this field and about the business of biotechnology. This is a 36 credit course program.
