Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore is one of the top art schools in the United States and is the oldest in the nation. Over 1,700 undergraduates and over 200 graduate students attend classes. The degrees offered by the school include a bachelor of fine arts, master of arts and master of fine arts. Undergraduate concentrations include animation, illustration, photography, printmaking, fiber arts and graphic design. The School of Art and Design at Montgomery College emphasizes building a portfolio during the educational process. Offering an associate of fine arts degree, the school prepares students to transfer to bachelor degree programs upon completion. The first year of studies focuses on core studio courses, where the second year focuses on the student's major. Major choices are graphic design or studio art. The school also offers a variety of continuing education classes and non-credit programs for all ages. In 2007, the school moved to new state-of-the-art facilities in Takoma Park.

The University of Maryland Department of Art offers students the experience of a major university while still maintaining a small art school feel. The school's enrollment includes over 250 undergraduates and approximately 18 graduate students. A visiting artist program gives students the chance to learn from well-known artists through lectures. The university offers a bachelor of arts degree with concentration options in printmaking, sculpture, digital media, graphic design and painting and drawing. The department offers courses in video, art theory, photography and art history in addition to the concentration areas.
