San Francisco's Academy of Art University offers multiple photography degree options. Students may elect for the two year Associate's of Art (AA), four year Bachelor's of Fine Art (BFA), or four year Master's of Fine Art (MFA) photography degrees. Associates level students must complete a total of sixty-six credit units that include forty-eight photography major courses and eighteen general liberal arts classes. The bachelors degree curriculum includes 132 units that fall into the four categories of photography major, art history, liberal arts, and elective. Students enrolled in the master's program must take sixty-three credits of studio, directed study, academic, and elective course work. Additionally, MFA students must complete a theses project in either a traditional film or digital media specialization. All students are expected to develop conceptual and critical analysis skills, professional readiness, lighting and camera techniques, and traditional or digital media knowledge prior to graduating.

Brown College's School of Design offers students a Bachelor's in Science of digital photography option. This thirty six month program can be completed in twelve academic quarters. Students must complete 180 credits of course work in order to complete the program. Graduates may find entry level photography jobs in speciality areas such as documentary, fashion, stock, or news photography.

Purdue University's College of Liberal Arts photography major is an intensive forty-five credit program. Students must complete twelve credits in art and design classes such as drawing, eighteen credits in basic studio methods and photography history, and specialized classes in photo technique. Additionally, students must take general liberal arts classes. Admission to upper level photography classes is based on a sophomore year portfolio. Individuals not selected to continue in the photography program based on the portfolio presentation must choose another area of study.
