The Stanford University Department of Computer Science was founded in 1965 and has coursework both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Stanford is a strong research university, and students are currently involved in studying the disciplines of artificial intelligence, robotics and scientific computing. As computer science often extends to other areas of knowledge, the university also provides a place for research that encompasses other disciplines including chemistry, genetics, physics and medicine.
The University of Texas at Austin is active in many research areas of computer science, including artificial intelligence, computer architecture and systems, as well as theory of computation. According to the UT website, the university has pursued the idea of universities as business incubators by having very strong entrepreneurship programs in the area technology.
The Penn State Department of Computer Science and Engineering ranks 28th in the United States with respect to computer science. The Computer Science Department was originally created in 1965, but in 1993 merged with the Computer Engineering Department to create the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Penn State is very strong in research as it ranks 9th in the nation with respect to total research expenditures.
The Purdue University College of Technology based in Indiana has an enrollment of approximately 5,000 students. Just a few of the available disciplines include programming, animation and networking. A total of 13 majors are offered through the college. Purdue also offers satellite locations across the state to reach a larger population.
