What Colleges Offer a Guidance Counseling Degree?

In most states, to become a guidance counselor you need to obtain a master's degree in the field of counseling. Most students will get an undergraduate degree in psychology, social work or sociology. Often times, graduate programs will offer master's degrees in school counseling, which is the equivalent to a guidance counseling program. There are many accredited programs throughout the U.S. including online programs.
  1. St. Johns University

    • St. John's University located in New York City offers a master of science in school psychology. The 66-credit program will qualify students for a provisional New York State certificate that authorizes practice as a school psychologist. After two years of experience, a school psychologist will obtain a permanent certificate in the field of school counseling. The program at St. John's offers two tracks--a general track and a bilingual track.

    San Diego State University

    • Students at San Diego State University, located in San Diego, California, can obtain a master of science degree in counseling with a specialization in school counseling. Individuals who graduate from this 60 to 62 credit-hour program will have the California PPS-SC credential necessary to practice school counseling in the state. San Diego State University also offers another track where students can specialize in school psychology along with marriage and family therapy.

    University of Arizona

    • The University of Arizona in Tucson offers several options for those who want to become guidance counselors. They have a master in education in school counseling that is designed to help students prepare to become guidance counselors in elementary, middle, and high schools in the state of Arizona. Completion of the program will lead to Arizona State Guidance Counselor Prekindergarten-12 certification. They also have an educational specialist program in school psychology.

    Argosy University

    • For non-traditional students, Argosy University has several options for graduate degrees in school counseling at some of their locations. Argosy University in Tampa and Sarasota, Florida, have MA school counseling programs. The campus in Sarasota also offers an educational specialist degree in school counseling. Students who complete any of these programs would be eligible for certification in guidance and counseling in the state of Florida. Argosy also offers MA degrees in school psychology in Dallas and Hawaii.
