Aeronautical Science Colleges

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the demand for professionals in the field of aerospace products and parts manufacturing will only increase by about 2 percent from 2008 through 2018, but predicts a large number of job openings due to retirements. A small number of colleges in the United States offer degree programs in aeronautical science that prepare students for entry into the field through a combination of classroom lectures, assignments and design projects.
  1. Stanford University

    • Stanford University offers a bachelor of science degree in general engineering with a specialization in astronautics and aeronautics. The program requires course work in mathematics, physics, mechanics, thermodynamics, computer programming, systems design, dynamics and controls and fluid dynamics. The university offers a minor in aeronautics for undergraduates as well as a combined, five-year baccalaureate and master's degree program. At the graduate level, Stanford University grants a traditional master of science degree, an engineering degree and a doctoral degree in aeronautics. In 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked Stanford University the fourth-best university in the United States.

    Rocky Mountain College

    • Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana, offers a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical science. Students in the program study not only aircraft systems and the scientific principles of flight, but also professional piloting. Among the courses required for the major are meteorology, safety, aviation power, flight operations, aviation law and resource management. Optional internships are available in the field. Students graduate with a commercial piloting license with instrument and multi-engine ratings in addition to their degrees. Students can also earn a flight instructor rating on their piloting license prior to graduation if they wish.

    Dowling College

    • Located in Oakdale, New York, Dowling College offers a bachelor of science degree in aerospace systems technology. The program features classes in general aeronautics, regulations, aviation weather and safety, air traffic control, aerospace systems, data structures, network design, calculus and physics. Students who wish to earn a commercial piloting license have the option to minor in flight. A limited number of paid cooperative work placements are available in the field, allowing students to alternate semesters of working in aeronautics and attending classes throughout their time at Dowling.
