Top Equine Colleges

A love of horses can easily be transformed into a rewarding, life-long career with many different options. An undergraduate degree in equine science or equine management, for example, can prepare a person to oversee horse breeding and nutrition, to teach riding and competitive showing or to go on to earn a degree as a equine veterinarian. Regardless of the desire, top equine colleges can be found throughout the country, and in parts not necessarily known for their association with horses.

    • Just five minutes down the road from the famous Churchill Downs and the running of the Kentucky Derby is one of the top equine programs in the country. Combining horses and business, Louisville offers the Equine Industry Program in which students take the business administration core and 30 hours of specialized horses classes. The school's location also is perfect for field trips and access to some of the top horse enthusiasts in the country.

    Colorado State University

    • Located in the heart of the West, Colorado State boasts the internationally recognized Equine Teaching and Research Center, which is known for its groundbreaking research in equine reproduction, lameness and orthopedics. For more than 20 years this facility has served not only the school but regional and national equine interests as well. There are plenty of hands-on opportunities combined with business and science classes.

    University of Findlay

    • In addition to an Equine Business Management, Findlay also offers an equestrian studies degree that focuses on either English or Western riding and training. The students' work is centered around two off-campus facilities: a 52-acre facility for the English equestrian studies program and the school's veterinary services, and 152-acre Animal Sciences Center, which is home to the Western riding and pre-veterinary medicine programs.

    Virginia Intermont College

    • This small, private Baptist College on the East Coast is situated near the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers a hands-on experience. In addition to learning about the horse and how to care for it, students also develop their riding skills. The school focuses on English riding, dressage and show jumping, while also preparing students for careers in training, instructing and show management. Students also have the opportunity to bring their own horse to school as long as it meets required skill levels.

    Morrisville State College

    • Students interested in this program must already possess an associate degree in equine science or a similarly accepted degree. Morrisville's program is designed to further knowledge in technical skills and business knowledge of the equine industry. Courses include equine nutrition, animal genetics and racing management. In order to finish the degree, students must complete an internship or international exchange program.
