The Best Astronautical Engineering Colleges

Astronautics focuses on the design, testing and construction of spacecraft and satellites. Also referred to as aerospace engineering, the field is often considered as subset of aeronautics. The most prominent astronautics organization in the United States is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA,) founded in 1958 (see Resource 2.) U.S. News and World Report magazine ranks the nation's top colleges and universities for astronautical engineering annually (see Resource 1.)
  1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

    • The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics offers undergraduate and graduate programs. The "AeroAstro" undergraduate core curriculum spans the foundation of astronautics, most notably with surveys of materials, structure, aerodynamics, electronic systems and propulsion. MIT also offers graduate-level degree paths in space propulsion and space systems. Topics of study include manned space exploration and military space systems engineering. The two-year program also prepares students to consider potential economic and societal factors in creating space systems.

    Stanford

    • Stanford University's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral studies in astronautics. Stanford's undergraduate program concentrates on key aspects of modern aerospace and astronautical systems technology. Introductory coursework includes thermodynamics, fluids engineering and astronautical dynamics and controls. The institution's graduate degree path can be completed in as little as one year, and combines a set of advanced math courses such as linear dynamic systems with several aeronautics-based technical electives.

    Purdue

    • Purdue University's undergraduate astronautics program provides students with a foundation in the technical aspects of aerospace science, namely vehicle dynamics, controls technology, materials analysis and systems design. The school also offers an Astrodynamics and Space Applications graduate study and Ph.D. program. Students analyze interplanetary missions, the environment of space as well as telemetry, data acquisition technology and mission operations. Graduate coursework includes advanced orbital dynamics, aerospace engineering optimization and satellite navigation.
