Interpreter Certification Schools

The American Translator Association (ATA) has approved 52 translation and interpreting schools in the United States. Upon completion of the certificate, students must pass the ATA Certification Exam which has an overall passing rate of below 20 percent. This is why there are also advanced certificates and degrees available for those wanting to better prepare for this exam and also earn extra credentials.
  1. Monterey Institute of International Studies

    • Monterey Institute of International Studies is a graduate school in California specializing in interdisciplinary studies of language, policy and business. The school offers short-term translation and interpreter programs and master of arts (MA) degree programs in conference interpretation, translation and interpretation, translation and localization management and general translation. There are seven short-term programs, which are offered on-site and online. Master's programs are offered in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian or Spanish and are usually paired with English.

    University of Chicago

    • Graham School of General Studies within the University of Chicago offers the Translation Studies Certificate Program in seven different tracks. Six of the tracks are a foreign language translated into the English language. These include Russian, Spanish, Chinese, French, German and Portuguese. The final track is from English to Spanish. The program can be completed in four courses, two required and two electives. Each course consists of two components. The first is three consecutive days of courses taught in English only. The second is an eight weeks practicum with online translation assignments graded by professional translators. An Advanced Certificate in Translation Studies is available to students who have completed two additional elective courses.

    New York University

    • New York University's Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting provides professional certificate programs, summer or weekend intensive programs and private instruction. A certificate in foreign languages is offered in the languages of Arabic, French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Japanese, Russian, Portuguese and Spanish. It can also be completed in a category format in Middle Eastern languages, East Asian languages, Slavic languages, Classical languages or Scandinavian languages. Summer intensives are offered in more than 100 languages for five days a week. Weekend intensive courses are offered in Arabic, French, German, Italian,
      Japanese, Latin, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Private instruction is available to those who cannot meet during scheduled class times. There are eight translation certificate tracks available and three specialized interpreting certificates.
