The United Kingdom long has been known for having many of the best and oldest universities in existence. The quality of these institutions is reflected by the students who come from around the world to take advantage of both their undergraduate and postgraduate programs. These universities are also pioneers in research development and boast Nobel Prize winners amongst their graduates.
  1. University of Cambridge

    • The University of Cambridge is one of the most famous in the world and the largest in the United Kingdom. It has 31 separate colleges, including three for women only and two for postgraduates. Each college within the University of Cambridge has its own staff and own requirements for entrance. Graduates from each college receive a degree from the University of Cambridge. The university is famous for its many museums and libraries that attract students and scholars from throughout the world. Cambridge's high standards are reflected in the fact there is intense competition to be admitted. In addition to needing excellent high school grades, students need to do well in a personal interview with the College Fellows, who evaluate candidates on their original thinking and creativity. Cambridge has produced 89 Nobel Laureates and one of its most famous graduates is Charles Darwin. Cambridge is also well known as a pioneer in research development. The school is a member of such organizations as the League of European Research Universities and the International Alliance of Research Universities. Cambridge is the top-ranked university in Europe by U.S. News & World Report and was ranked second in the world in the 2009 QS World University Rankings.

    University of Oxford

    • One of the leading universities in the world and the first in the English-speaking world, the University of Oxford does not have a central campus, but rather is spread out over multiple sites around the city of Oxford. It has 40 different colleges and halls that draw students from more than 140 countries. Over a third of its 20,000-plus student body comes from outside the United Kingdom. The university has an outstanding curriculum and is well known for its many advanced research programs. The many divisions of the university include the humanities, mathematics, physical and life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences. The excellence of Oxford has made it the home of the Rhodes Scholarship, which draws students from throughout the world of postgraduate studies. To be admitted to Oxford, students must have outstanding high school grades and pass a one-on-one interview. The 2009 QS World University rankings had Oxford as the fifth best in the world. U.S. News & World Report ranks Oxford third in Europe.

    Imperial College London

    • The Imperial College London is an institution based in the sciences that is respected for its excellent teaching, academic courses and research programs. Opened in 1907, the college has more than 13,000 students that come from 158 countries. The college features small classes with approximately one teacher for every 10 students. Nearly 240 different courses are taught at this college with advanced engineering, medicine and natural sciences departments. It also has a highly respected business school. The quality of the learning at the Imperial College London is reflected in the fact 15 of its graduates have received Nobel Prizes, including five in both the fields of medicine and chemistry.
