The Big Event course is an introductory course that introduces students to the rudiments of the event planning business. Topics include developing themes and managing a budget. Students in this course assist in organizing a yearly student social event for the college as part of the curriculum.
The objective of this course is to provide students with a thorough knowledge of the preparation and presentation of fine cuisine. Students will learn about the many aspects that govern food selection in event planning, such as the availability of foods and cultural traditions and restrictions. Students will become familiar with a variety of ethnic cooking and local menus.
The purpose of this advanced course is to encourage students to focus on the preparation and execution of a significant dining affair. Students are able to gain classroom and practical experience as they coordinate the event from its early planning phase and follow through with the service of the event.
Convention Services focuses on the industry potential and possibilities involved in event planning. Particular attention is given to sales and management and the details involved in meetings, conventions and business events.
The Event Planning and Promotion course at Fanshawe College is an advanced level course that teaches students the intricacies involved in planning and organizing an event. Scheduling, managing and promotional techniques are taught, as are catering to particular audiences and themes.
The Hospitality Management diploma program is a two-year cooperative education program. While the program is designed to prepare students for a career in the food service industry, it deals intricately with event planning for banquets and catering. This allows students to elect for a career in the event planning industry as well, though students will be best prepared for fine dining events. Practical training is provided in on-site venues.
The Recreation and Leisure Services program is a two-year diploma opportunity that provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to plan, organize and implement a wide variety of special events. The program is available on a full or a part-time basis and offers a wide variety of field placements to allow students to become familiar with recreational and special events.
