Canadian Bookkeeping Courses

Bookkeeping courses teach students how to keep track of transactions. Bookkeeping differs from accounting in that accountants design the financial procedures that bookkeepers use. Most schools that offer bookkeeping courses are community colleges or for-profit schools, and some offer courses online.
  1. Centennial College

    • Located in Ontario, Centennial College offers a certifcate in bookkeeping. Enrolled students must take nine courses in bookkeeping, six of which are accounting classes. Students will take classes in payroll, taxation and microcomputing systems. Students who pass the course with a 65 percent or better are eligible for an exemption with the Canadian Institute of bookkeeping, making them eligible for a professional career as a bookkeeper.

    Durham College

    • Located in Ontario, Durham College offers a certificate in Bookkeeping. Students in the program will complete thirteen courses in accounting, payroll administration, and customer service and ethics, among others. Students have the option of completing the program in one year, but have five years to finish it. Students wishing to enroll in the program must be at least 19 years old and have an overall grade point average of 2.0. Students can apply to be certified by the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping upon completion of the course, but they must have work experience as a bookkeeper.

    Vancouver Community College

    • Vancouver Community College offers a course in accounting, bookkeeping and payroll. The program is 186 credit hours. Students enrolled in the course will take classes in keyboarding, decision making and other accounting courses. Students must be 18 years old to enroll in the program.

    CDI College

    • CDI college is a for-profit college that offers a certificate in Bookkeeping and Accounting Assistance. The school has campuses in Ajax and Toronto, and the program places an emphasis on the use of accounting software to prepare students for whatever accounting software their future job uses. Students will take fifteen courses, including courses in accounting, payroll processing and bookkeeping software. Students must be at least 18 years old to enroll in the program.
