Top Ranking Schools of Nursing Degrees

U.S. News & World Report offers national rankings of various educational institutions, including nursing schools. In 2007 the magazine ranked more than 250 nursing schools, including both public and private colleges and universities. The committee rated the nursing schools based on such criteria as the opinions of academic experts and peer reviews.
  1. University of Washington

    • Since 1984 U.S. News & World Report has rated the University of Washington as the nation's top nursing school. The 2009-10 class included just over 600 undergrads and graduate students. The school offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, and Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing and 19 different master's specialties, including nursing midwifery, medical-surgical clinical nursing and psychiatric/mental-health nursing. In 2008, the school received $7 million in research funding from the National Institutes of Health. The school is home to multiple research centers, including the Center for Women's Health and Gender Research and the Center on Infant Mental Health and Development.

    Johns Hopkins University

    • Johns Hopkins University, one of the preeminent medical schools in the nation, offers bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing, as well as doctorates and certificate programs. Ranked fourth on the U.S. News & World Report's 2007 rankings, and second amongst private universities, the nursing school draws more than $7 million in research and offers prestigious research fellowships. Forty percent of the faculty members qualify as Fellows in the American Academy of Nursing.

    University of Michigan

    • The University of Michigan netted a top-five ranking on the U.S. News & World Report's 2007 top nursing schools list. Located in Ann Arbor, the nursing school offers programs for undergrads, grad students, Ph.D. candidates and postdoctoral fellows. For undergrads, the student-to-faculty ratio comes in at 19:1, while graduate students enjoy a 10:1 ratio. The school boasts esteemed instructors, with 90 percent of the tenured faculty holding doctorates. The university hosts the North Campus Family Health Service and Community Family Health Center, both of which offer hands-on training for nursing students.
