List of Accelerated Private Schools for Physician Assistants

With undergraduate baccalaureate programs typically taking four years to complete, the educational pathway leading toward a career in physician assistance can take up to six years. Some private colleges and universities feature accelerated programs that allow students to combine baccalaureate studies in biology or health sciences with master's degrees in physician assistant studies. Private colleges and universities sometimes have religious affiliations, and offer additional opportunities for students to complete clinical rotations at partner private hospitals.
  1. University of Detroit Mercy

    • The University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) was created after the University of Detroit and Mercy College of Detroit consolidated in 1990. Today, the private Catholic university advances Jesuit and Mercy traditions throughout its seven colleges and schools. With more than 100 academic degrees and programs of study, the university offers an accelerated option for prospective physician assistants in its College of Health Professions. Students matriculated into UDM's Physician Assistant Five-Year Program can graduate with a Bachelor of Science in biology and Master of Science in physician assistant studies in what normally would take six years. The program's curriculum spans pre-professional and professional phases, and includes general science courses such as organic chemistry I and II, cell and molecular biology, and physiology. During the program's latter years, students take more specialized graduate level coursework and participate in clinical rotations.

    Kettering College of Medical Arts

    • Founded in 1967, Kettering College of Medical Arts (KCMA) is a private college affiliated with the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, and is located in the Dayton, Ohio metropolitan area. The college offers a modest selection of academic programs in medical and allied health fields, including an accelerated program in physician assistance. KCMA students matriculated into the college's baccalaureate program in human biology can optionally pursue a highly competitive track leading to a Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS). The Bachelor of Science in human biology "3+2"-Year MPAS accelerated program allows students to earn both degrees in just five years. After completing three years of human biology bachelor's degree requirements, students can apply to enter the accelerated physician assistant master's degree program. The curriculum includes courses such as human physiology, applied pathophysiology and basic nutrition, in addition to several other practicums.

    Philadelphia University

    • A private institution, Philadelphia University was founded in 1884. Today, the school offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in more than 50 areas of study. Philadelphia University's School of Health & Science features an accelerated program option for prospective physician assistant students to earn both bachelor's and master's degrees in the field in five years. The bachelor's/master's Physician Assistant Studies program is divided into pre-professional and professional phases. The program's first six semesters consist of general education and science courses, in addition to introductory seminars in physician assistant studies such as Topics in Professionalism: Physician Assistant. Starting with the program's fourth year, students take courses from the professional curriculum, with the final year reserved for clinical rotations and a master's project.
