A career in law enforcement involves occupations such as police officers, security specialists, detectives, forensics experts and other positions. These careers require a knowledge of how the U.S. justice system operates. Therefore, a number of colleges offer programs in law enforcement within criminal justice departments.   1. Miami Dade College

    • Students enrolled in the criminal justice technology and basic law enforcement program at Miami Dade College work toward an associate degree. The program prepares students for entry-level positions in a variety of law enforcement occupations, such as local federal fish and wildlife agencies and police departments. The degree requires 64 credits, which takes a minimum of five semesters of full-time study. Students must complete 22 general education credits and courses such as criminology, constitutional law, criminal procedures, and parole and probation. The program also prepares students for further study at a higher level in law enforcement fields.

    Florida International University

    • Florida International University offers graduate and undergraduate courses in criminal justice for students interested in a law enforcement career. The school's criminal justice department offers bachelor's degrees, master's degrees and a public affairs doctorate degree program. The department also provides a combined bachelor's and master's degree track in which undergraduate students take 12 graduate credits at the end of their studies. The undergraduate track is divided into two sections. The first involves general study during a student's first two years. The second section makes up the last two years of study and involves 60 credits focusing on core classwork in criminal justice and law enforcement studies. The master's track includes 36 credits, which amounts to 12 classes.

    St. Thomas University

    • The Biscayne College campus of St. Thomas University provides undergraduate study in criminal justice that lasts 120 credits. The program caters to students interested in a career in law enforcement as well as correctional services or judicial services. The curriculum allows students to get a second major during their four years, which helps enhance their education, making them more employable. The program recommends students earn second majors in political science, psychology, environmental justice and history.
