Christopher Newport University in Newport News is named after the town's founding sea captain. Hosting 4,800 undergraduate students, CNU was named one of the top 10 up-and-coming liberal arts schools by "U.S. News & World Report." The school offers men's and women's teams in basketball, cross country, lacrosse, sailing, soccer, tennis, and track and field.
