American River College offers a commercial music recording program in which students can earn an associate degree in music in preparation to transfer to a four-year institution. The two-year vocational program gives hands-on instruction to students to prepare them for a career in studio recording, sound editing, post-production engineering and even sound-effects editing and production.

The McNally Smith College of Music offers three music recording degrees: an associate of applied science program in recording technology, a Bachelor of Science in music program in music production, and an associate of applied music program with an emphasis in music production. Each program is designed to prepare the student for varying levels of expertise in the music industry, with the bachelor's degree program being the most comprehensive.
