Classical Guitar School of New York was founded by famed Russian concert guitarist Yasha Kofman. Kofman has been called "one in a million," "a passionate artist" and "a master teacher" by students and by outlets like the Associated Press. Kofman began studying guitar in what was then the Soviet Union at the age of 11, and was a student at Gnessin School of Music as a teenager. He moved to the United States in 1987 and became an instructor at the American Institute of Guitar. Kofman then started and became director of the Classic Guitar School of New York. The school offers private lessons for all ages and skill levels.

The Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California offers several degrees in classical guitar. The Bachelor of Music program is a four-year course that includes core music classes in conducting, music history, ensemble and aural skills, as well as classes in performance and individual instruction. The school's master's degree adds interpretation of baroque music and classical guitar literature and history to more performance practice. The doctorate-level also requires four doctoral recitals in addition to post-graduate coursework. In 2010, the faculty of the classical guitar department at Thornton included concert guitarist William Kanengiser, music writer and performer Scott Tennant and internationally famous musician Pepe Romero.
