Health Inspector Schools in Missouri

Health inspectors provide inspections of public and private work facilities to ensure that they are safe for workers and the general public. Requirements for health inspectors vary by state, but most states seek applicants who have a degree in occupational safety, occupational health or environmental health and safety. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the number of jobs in this field to increase by 14 percent through 2018. Several Missouri colleges offer extensive degree programs in environmental or occupational safety.

    • The University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg offers a bachelor of science degree in the field of safety management. Students pursuing a degree in this field can concentrate in one of several different areas: occupational and industrial loss prevention, emergency management and health and fire safety. The degree program requires 120 credit hours for completion, of which 63 hours are required in the field of safety management. Courses include areas such as principles of accident causation and prevention, safety program management, workers compensation legislation, accident investigation and industrial hazard control.

    Missouri Southern State University

    • Missouri Southern State University offers a degree completion program at the bachelor's degree level in the field of environmental health. The program is offered as a distance education program primarily for transfer students who have completed general education requirements but cannot commute to the campus in Joplin. Graduating students receive a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health. Students must have completed at least 43-44 credit hours prior to entry in the program. An additional 21 hours in general education are required by the university for this program. Students then complete 60 additional credit hours in areas such as occupational health and safety, food safety, environmental health, hazardous incident management, risk management, environmental toxicology and water and air quality management.

    Southeast Missouri State University

    • Southeast Missouri State University (SMSU) in Cape Girardeau offers a Master of Science in Technology Management that provides students with the necessary background to qualify as a health inspector. This program is designed for students with diverse backgrounds who may not have any experience in the field. The broad "technology management" designation makes this degree highly marketable in areas outside of occupational health and safety such as industrial education management. One field of concentration within the program, however, is the field of workplace environment and health safety. This concentration requires courses in areas such as introduction to toxicology, industrial hygiene, hazardous material assessment, risk management applications and occupational health.
