Mental Health Law Schools

Health law covers the regulations and rules surrounding the health care industry and patients, and mental health law specifically deals with the mental health sector. To practice law in this field, you must have the proper law training, and you must specialize in the mental health industry. Schools around the country offer mental health concentrations.   1. California Western School of Law

    • The California Western School of Law's Institute of Health Law Studies in combination with University of California San Diego offers a Master's Degree program in health law, including mental health law. Coursework focuses on the medical and ethical side of practicing law, and you also learn about standard law rules and management practices. Coursework includes financial accounting, health law principles, health law policy and bioethics. This course is for working students, and you can take classes part time. You also receive career counseling from the school to help you with your future career.

    University of Minnesota

    • This school offers a Health Law and Bioethics concentration, and this is an interdisciplinary course. You learn about family law, mental health issues, health insurance and regulatory theory. As a student, you work on the "Minnesota Journal of Law, Science and Technology", and you become a member of the Health Law and Bioethics Student Association and part of the alumni network when you graduate. The school helps you find summer and part-time jobs. With this program, you can either pursue a Master of Arts degree in Bioethics or a Joint Degree in Law, Health and the Life Sciences.

    University of Virginia

    • The University of Virginia offers a Health Law program, and students learn in both classroom and clinical settings, including working with lawyers at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Students work with lawyers in a clinical setting, and you can choose from two different settings: elderly advocacy or mental health law. Coursework includes physician and healthcare administration regulations and medical specialties, including neurology, pediatrics and internal medicine. This is a dual degree program, and you receive both a Juris Doctor and a Master of Public Health.

    New York Law School

    • The New York Law School has an Online Mental Disability Law Program, and this course is for professionals currently working with mental health patients. If you complete the program, you receive either a Certificate in Advanced Mental Disability Law Studies or a Master of Arts degree in Mental Disability Law Studies. You can also just take classes, and this is an evening program. Coursework includes patient advocacy, forensic report writing and medical institution evaluation.
