Rheumatology Colleges

Rheumatology programs in the United States are offered in the form of fellowships to graduates of medical school and postgraduate residencies. These two-year fellowships are competitive programs with rigorous academic and clinical training. Most programs expect fellows to participate in clinical research throughout the program to further proficiency in the field.
  1. Boston University School of Medicine

    • Boston University School of Medicine offers a two-year fellowship in Rheumatology where fellows gain experience with in-patient and out-patient care in rheumatic diseases and musculoskeletal diseases. By the conclusion of the program, fellows are familiar with patient examination, diagnosis development, therapeutic injections and the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and other medications in the treatment of musculoskeletal diseases. Fellows are involved in the care of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, osteoarthritis, scleroderma and non-articular rheumatic diseases. Weekly and bi-weekly participation is expected in clinical case conferences, pathology conferences, lecture series and teaching rounds. (Reference 1)

    • The Rheumatology fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is generally two years in length, but fellows may choose to continue through a third year. The first year of the program introduces fellows to clinical patient care in the field of rheumatology through practical application of laboratory work, imaging, investigation and pathology. Learning takes place at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center and its affiliated hospitals and clinics and also through imaging, research and clinical case conferences and teaching rounds. During the second year of the program, fellows participate in clinical research while continuing clinical practice in pathology, orthopedics, rehabilitation and laboratory medicine. (Reference 2)

    Mount Sinai School of Medicine

    • The Mount Sinai School of Medicine offers a two-year fellowship program in rheumatology at the Mount Sinai Medical Center and the Bronx VA Medical Center. Fellows administer patient care at both facilities as well as in patient home visits. At the hospitals, fellows learn about the field of rheumatology and study in contemporary clinical equipment and technology to prepare for a career as a rheumatology consultant. The unique home visit program exposes individuals to the socioeconomic and emotional difficulties faced by patients with debilitating rheumatologic diseases. Students attend teaching rounds and lecture series each week and monthly lectures on bone radiology. Fellows are also encouraged to undertake research opportunities throughout the program.
