Sports management is the field of business devoted to the financial and personnel issues surrounding professional sports teams, such as negotiating contracts and identifying and retaining corporate sponsors. Sports managers typically must have a bachelor's degree or higher to find employment. In California, a small number of colleges offer a major or minor in sports management, designed to prepare students to deal with the challenges that are unique to handling the business affairs of athletes, sports teams and other groups.

    • Affiliated with the Mennonite Brethren, Fresno Pacific University is a private institution. Among the programs available to the school's more than 2,400 undergraduate and graduate students is a master's degree program in sports administration. The program lasts 14 months, with classes held entirely online. Students must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in kinesiology, sports management or business and current experience working or volunteering in a position related to sports management to receive admissions consideration. Among the courses required for the program are marketing, leadership and administration, legal aspects of sports, sports sales and sponsorship, research methods and sports psychology. The program culminates in a comprehensive examination. More than 97 percent of students at Fresno Pacific University receive some form of financial aid, according to the college's website.

    California Baptist University

    • Home to more than 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students, California Baptist University, opened in 1950. The school is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. For undergraduates, the school offers a minor in sports management that requires coursework in accounting, macroeconomics, Bible-based management, marketing, first aid and safety, sports coaching and officiating, kinesiology, organization and administration of physical education and sports, and sports and behavior. The college also grants a Master of Science in kinesiology with an emphasis in sports management. This program includes courses in ethics, leadership, sports law, marketing and promotion, and event and facility management. Students participate in two internships and complete a research thesis prior to receiving the graduate degree. Around 86 percent of freshmen and 92 percent of all continuing students benefit from financial aid, explains the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges."

    Dominican University of California

    • The Roman Catholic Church founded the Dominican University of California in 1890 in San Rafael, a community 12 miles north of San Francisco. The school has an enrollment of more than 2,000 students and features an undergraduate minor in sports management. The program requirements include classes in financial accounting, facilities and operational management, legal liability and risk management, sports media and public relations and sports psychology. Students also complete a one-semester internship. Around 98 percent of freshmen and 85 percent of continuing students at the Dominican University of California are financial aid recipients, reports the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges."
