In 1982, the University of Illinois at the Medical Center and the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle consolidated to create the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). It is a comprehensive research university and the largest public university in Chicago, Illinois. The College of Engineering at UIC has six academic departments. These include Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Materials Engineering, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering. Northern Illinois University (NIU) is a comprehensive teaching and research institution. Proud of its beginnings in 1899 as a teachers' college, it has a sterling reputation for preparing students for careers in education with an emphasis on American higher education. NIU now also counts technical education among its offerings. NIU College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (CEET) has four academic departments and each offers an undergraduate B.S. and graduate M.S. program. Eastern Illinois University (EIU) was founded in 1895. It is routinely named in the "Princeton's Review of Midwestern Colleges" and by "U.S. News & World Report" as one of the best Midwestern colleges in its class. EIU features a beautiful campus designed by internationally renowned architect Antoine Predock. This stunning facility is home to the music, art and theater departments. EIU offers a B.S. degree in Applied Engineering and Technology. This program is one of four in Illinois and 103 programs in the United States accredited by the Association of Technology, Management and Applied Engineering at the Baccalaureate level. Its Cost Guarantee and GradTrac programs guarantees a four-year lock on total cost. GradTrac is a special admissions program for select students who have not achieved the minimum requirements for general admission. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) is a nationally recognized university that has the lowest tuition of all of the 12 state universities in Illinois.
