The School of Digital Media Arts at Mildred Elley Business School provides several program options in game design at its Albany campus location. An associate in occupational studies degree is available with concentrations in advanced game design or advanced 3D animation. An undergraduate certificate in game design and 3D animation is also offered. These programs provide intensive hands-on instruction in animation, modeling, digital image manipulation, editing techniques, game design theory, drawing and professional development.

This program includes training in many areas applicable to game design, including 3D modeling, visual design theory, graphic design, interactive communication design, computer programming, animation and audio/video techniques. Located about seven miles from Albany, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute provides a bachelor's degree with a major in game and simulation arts and science. This program emphasizes the design and analysis of games and simulation through team experience and formal research. Course requirements include computer science, game mechanics and design, interactive character design, interactive narratives, experimental game design and game development. Students may also choose to pursue additional dual degree concentrations in electronic arts, human computer interaction, computer science, entrepreneurship and cognitive science.

Located approximately 60 miles outside of Albany, Hampshire College offers an undergraduate concentration in digital media that provides training in many topics related to game design and development. These include digital film and video, computer graphics, animation and electronic music. Students may choose from a range of courses, such as digital image manipulation for film and video, media production, sequential imagery, artificial life programming, new media convergence and digital art.
