Canadian Colleges for Geriatrics

Geriatrics or gerontology is the branch of medicine that specifically deals with the process of aging, seniors, and their ailments. Geriatric colleges in Canada often come in the form of medicine schools and colleges of medicine. Either as an elective or as a major, geriatric medicine enables and qualifies students to serve the aged community.

      McMaster University offers applicants the opportunity to go deeper into the study of geriatrics under the Division of Geriatric Medicine. The geriatric medicine program develops and trains students through its affiliations with the Hamilton Health Sciences Hospital, the St. Joseph's Hospital, the St. Peter's Hospital and other organizations in the Hamilton, Ontario area. With the goals "to maximize the positive aspects of aging and to educate and train a new generation of health professionals in the care of the elderly," this program offers both undergraduate and postgraduate levels of geriatric medicine.

    Dalhouse University

    • Dalhouse University also has geriatric medicine as a major component of its medicine program, where students can pursue it at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A 3-week geriatric rotation program is available where undergraduate students actively participate in geriatric care. For the postgrads, Dalhouse has set up a program in league with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to immerse students in care for the elderly through internships with geriatricians.

    Niagara College of Canada

    • At the Niagara College of Canada, students can gain the geriatric mental health certificate. This certificate program is part-time, covering 405 course-credit hours. Niagara's community mental health department has subdivisions of the nursing degree dedicated to geriatrics such as the introduction to the study of aging and the physiology of aging.

    University of Toronto

    • The University of Toronto's department of medicine grants postgraduate students the opportunity to further themselves in geriatric medicine. The 2-year program has been accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada where students are integrated into geriatric clinical training and research in addition to their studies. The University of Toronto also sponsors the geriatrics Care for the Elderly Fellowship which is a full-time, year-long program collaborating with the Sunnybrook Health Science Centre, Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care, Riverdale Hospital, and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
