• Chartered in 1693, William & Mary is the second-oldest college in the United States. This college, ranked sixth-best public university for 2011 by U.S. News & World Report, is very selective, according to the school's website. Spread across five schools, William & Mary offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs and even lets students design their own majors. The college boasts small classes and a 12-to-one student-to-faculty ratio. The college has more than 400 student clubs and organizations, and provides service opportunities. According to the school's website, the college has accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business and the Association of American Law Schools.

Roanoke College

• Roanoke College is a four-year liberal arts school that is the second-oldest Lutheran-related college in the nation. According to the school's website, U.S. News named Roanoke as one of the best up and coming colleges for 2011. The college offers 35 majors, 30 minors and 23 concentrations. Class sizes are small; the average class has 18 students. The school has a 14-to-one student-to-faculty ratio. Outside of class, Roanoke offers more than 100 student organizations as well as many religious groups. Roanoke College holds accreditation from Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Sweet Briar College

• Founded in 1901, Sweet Briar College is a private, women-only college. The college offers 40 major and minor programs along with pre-professional programs in law, medicine and veterinary medicine. Ninety percent of the classes at Sweet Briar have fewer than 20 students, according to the school's website. The student-to-faculty ratio is nine to one. Sweet Briar offers a study abroad program and an equestrian program. Outside of class, students at Sweet Briar can participate in any of the more than 50 student-run organizations as well as sports such as field hockey, lacrosse and tennis. The school's campus, located in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, has two lakes and hiking and horseback riding trails. Sweet Briar College carries accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
