Roanoke College is a four-year liberal arts school that is the second-oldest Lutheran-related college in the nation. According to the school's website, U.S. News named Roanoke as one of the best up and coming colleges for 2011. The college offers 35 majors, 30 minors and 23 concentrations. Class sizes are small; the average class has 18 students. The school has a 14-to-one student-to-faculty ratio. Outside of class, Roanoke offers more than 100 student organizations as well as many religious groups. Founded in 1901, Sweet Briar College is a private, women-only college. The college offers 40 major and minor programs along with pre-professional programs in law, medicine and veterinary medicine. Ninety percent of the classes at Sweet Briar have fewer than 20 students, according to the school's website. The student-to-faculty ratio is nine to one. Sweet Briar offers a study abroad program and an equestrian program. Outside of class, students at Sweet Briar can participate in any of the more than 50 student-run organizations as well as sports such as field hockey, lacrosse and tennis.
