Colleges in South Carolina That Offer a Master's in Social Work

A master's degree in social work (M.S.W.) can lead to a rewarding career helping the disadvantaged. Social workers may assist families in need or work for child protective services helping children who come from abusive homes. The M.S.W. is only offered by two universities in the state of South Carolina, but through innovative partnerships with other educational facilities, students can also pursue the M.S.W. through distance education.
  1. Winthrop University

    • Winthrop University, which is located in Rock Hill, offers the M.S.W. degree through its Department of Social Work. The degree program requires 60 credit hours in the field of social work. The program is offered as a two-year full-time program or as a weekend program that can be extended to three years of study. The 60 credit hour program is designed for students with no previous education or experience in the social work field. For those holding a bachelor's degree in social work, a 39 credit hour advanced standing program is offered instead. Students applying for this program must have obtained their bachelor's degree from a school with a social work program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). All three programs require students to complete field instruction through internships while enrolled.

    • The College of Social Work at The University of South Carolina offers full-time, part-time and advanced standing programs. Both the full- and part-time programs require students to complete 60 credit hours in order to graduate with the M.S.W. The advanced standing course differs in that students entering the program must complete four seminars in the summer prior the fall semester. Upon successful completion of the four seminars, students can be admitted to the advanced standing program which can then be completed in 12 months of full-time study.
