The University of Rochester Medical Center offers courses of study leading to a master of science degree in the field of dental science. The school also offers additional coursework as part of its oral science training program, a program designed to provide students with additional training to support their Ph.D. and post-doctoral studies. The master of science program requires students to complete 30 credit hours of coursework in fields of study such as Oral Microbiology, Fundamentals of Dental Caries, Ethics in Research, Mechanisms of Microbial Pathogenesis and Introduction to Dental Epidemiology and Research Design. Courses offered in the post-doctoral studies and oral science training program are also common to the master of science program.

The University of Michigan's School of Dental Medicine, which is highly regarded for its graduate training programs in dental science, offers three distinct pathways in post-graduate dental training. The university offers graduate courses leading to a master's degree in the growing field of dental hygiene as well as courses in the field of periodontics. Michigan has recently implemented its third program as well, a Master of Science in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Beyond the master's degrees, Michigan also offers courses leading to the Ph.D. in Oral Health Sciences. The dental hygiene program's coursework is mainly focused in the regions of research methods and various courses designed to prepare students to serve as dental hygiene educators. The periodontics program emphasizes core coursework in areas like oral diagnosis, physiology, therapeutics and conscious sedation. The oral and maxillofacial program emphasizes coursework in the areas of microscopic pathology, oral medicine and clinical pathology.

The University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) divides it post-graduate dental coursework among the six major academic divisions of the dental school: restorative dentistry; advanced prosthodontics, biomaterials and hospital dentistry; community dentistry and public health; associated clinical specialties; oral medicine and biology; and surgical and diagnostic sciences. The university offers both master's and doctoral programs in most of these fields. Coursework can vary greatly across each discipline, but as with most graduate dental programs, there are courses that are common to many of the programs as well.
