Majors in Computer Networking

Computer networking is an important field that affects businesses and educational institutions across the nation. Behind the technology that allows computer networking to occur, however, are professionals who were trained to create and administer those networks. Computer network administrators may have obtained their position through a number of different educational paths. Colleges and universities offering programs in computer networking do so through different but similar degree programs.
  1. Computer Networking Major

    • One of the most obvious degrees to pursue in order to enter the computer networking field is the bachelor's degree in computer networking. Most institutions will offer the major as part of the Bachelor of Science degree.

Dakota State University offers a Bachelor of Science in Computer Networking degree that requires the completion of 120 credit hours. Students complete 30 credit hours in general education courses, 19 hours of electives, 11 hours of additional coursework required by the university and a total of 60 credit hours in computer networking.

Courses of study include Operating Environments, Computer Hardware, Data Communications and Networking, Operating Systems Security, Intro to Discrete Math. and Structured Systems Analysis and Design.

    Computer Science Major

    • A bachelor's degree in computer science can also lead to a computer networking career. The computer science major is one of the more common majors offered in the computer networking field.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts offers the computer science degree at the undergraduate level. The school also requires the traditional coursework that provides students with a general education foundation.

Courses in computer science include Foundations of Computer Science, Computer Networks, Database Systems, Theory of Computation, WebWare: Computational Technology for Network Information Systems. and Software Security Engineering.

    Computer Information Systems (CIS) Major

    • A third possible path to the computer networking field is obtaining a degree in business administration with an emphasis in computer information systems. Some network administration jobs in the business sector require a background in business, as well as computers.

The Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree offered by Georgia State University comes with a concentration in computer information systems. The program is offered with various tracks, such as those in computer network security and software development.

Coursework includes Protecting Entities and Information, Designing and Managing Networks, Organizing and Managing Information Services, and Analyzing Business Systems.
