Different Majors in Engineering

Engineering is the combination of math and science to solve real-world problems. Students have the opportunity to pursue various engineering disciplines that prepare them for careers involving building structures, designing devices, developing chemical compounds and manufacturing power. The National Center for Education Statistics lists the most popular engineering majors as mechanical engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering and electrical engineering.
  1. Mechanical Engineering

    • A mechanical engineering degree teaches students about materials science and physics, and how these fields are applied to areas such as design, analysis, and manufacturing and maintenance. Students learn how heat and mechanical power are used in the production of machines and tools. Courses teach students about kinematics, structural analysis, mechanics and thermodynamics. Graduates can work in careers involving industrial equipment, robotics, heating and cooling systems and medical devices.

    Civil Engineering

    • Students enrolled in a civil engineering degree program learn about the design and construction of large structures. These structures may include buildings, bridges, dams and highways. Courses in the program include civil engineering materials, structural analysis, hydraulics and hydrology, soil mechanics, green building design and building construction. These courses teach students to solve problems involving the deteriorating of infrastructure, energy needs, traffic, pollution control, urban development and earth's ecosystem.

    Chemical Engineering

    • Chemical engineering combines the subjects of chemistry, biology, physics and math. Students study areas involving nanotechnology, alternative energy, pharmaceuticals and fuel cells. The program offers students an opportunity to learn about chemical engineering principles in a classroom and apply those principles into laboratory work. Additional topics include fluid mechanics, chemical reaction kinetics, energy and mass transfer, and chemical engineering process design.

    Electrical Engineering

    • Electrical engineering majors study the principles and applications involved in electricity and electronic products. Students in the program learn about electronic devices, telecommunications, control systems and signal processing. Courses teach students how electricity is used to transmit energy and powers systems. Opportunities are also available for students to learn about specific subjects, such as wireless systems, modern optics, power and energy systems, communication, data compression and computing.
