Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) businesses provide heating and cooling systems to commercial, industrial and residential buildings. HVAC technicians install, maintain and repair these systems. Licensed HVAC professionals work for HVAC contractors and repair shops, local or federal government, hospitals, or office buildings. An estimated 16 percent of HVAC technicians in the U.S. are self-employed. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for licensed HVAC technicians should grow 28 percent nationwide through the year 2018. South Carolina requires certification for HVAC technicians. HVAC training program sites in South Carolina include Greenville Technical College, Tri-County Technical College in Pendelton and Horry-Georgetown Technical College in Conway.
