Distance education courses provide employers and employees with a convenient method of increasing awareness of accident and injury prevention in the workplace. Workplace health and safety courses that are offered through distance education generally require approximately 100 hours to complete. The programs are designed to increase employee and employer knowledge in the management of potential risks in the workplace.
Topics typically included in a distance education course include international legislation, protective equipment, chemical handling, employer and employee responsibilities, handling tools and equipment, strain and other injuries. Courses also discuss first aid measures used to treat workplace injuries and use case studies to discuss how injuries are managed properly.
Students are usually assessed through written assignments that must be completed at the conclusion of each lesson. The assignments are returned to the students to point out areas that require further concentration. Instructors are generally available throughout the course to discuss any concerns or difficulties the students may be having.
