How to Write a Scientific Report for a Gram Positive Cocci

Most Gram-positive cocci are organisms that cause infection (germs). Gram-positive cocci can cause atopic dermatitis and are a common cause of pneumonia and septicemia. Microbiologists depend on colony morphology (pigmentation, shape, size) and the Gram-stain to categorize bacteria. To make a Gram-stain a primary stain (crystal violet) is added to a heat-fixed (dead by heat) smear of a bacterial culture. Then a trapping agent, iodine, is added. Next alcohol or acetone is added to rapidly de-colorize the smear, and it is finally counter-stained with the red dye safranin. Gram-positive cells stain purple, while Gram-negative cells stain pink.

Instructions

  1. Writing a Scientific Report for a Gram-Positive Cocci

    • 1

Collect a bacterial smear on a slide and observe it beneath a microscope.

    • 2

Record the visual characteristics of the bacteria in the report; such as, the shape, size. color, texture, and the nature of the bacterial cluster. Determine weather the culture is loose, or hemolytic (burst or leaking).

    • 3

Perform a Gram-stain by injecting the necessary dyes to determine the positive or negative structure of the bacteria. If the dye turns the bacteria purple it's positive. Record these findings.

    • 4

Construct the paper with the following sections: Title page - featuring the title of the article, the Author's name and contact information; Abstract - a short summary of what the paper accomplishes; An Introduction - a statement that discusses the historical importance of the research and the means and methods used to carry out the research; The Results - a section describing the specific findings of the data, including a description of the bacteria; The Discussion - a section explaining the significance of the results; References - a section sighting the textual works used to establish the validity of the research; Figures and Tables - a section illustrating the major data as photographs, graphs and/or tables.
