How to Study a Degree in Civil Engineering

Civil engineers design safe dams, water/sewage treatment plants, roads, power stations and most other structures, small and large. A degree in civil engineering offers many career choices, including working for the state or government. Some employers are willing to pay for you to attend civil engineering school if you agree to stay employed with them for a certain amount of time. It is possible to earn a degree in civil engineering in five years or less, as a Bachelor of Science is the minimum education requirement for civil engineers for most companies.

Instructions

    • 1

Take courses toward earning a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering. Two top-rated engineering schools are Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge and University of California, Berkeley. If you prefer to attend a school with more flexible hours, consult the Guide to Online Schools or the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology's "Search All Accredited Programs" website.

    • 2

Go beyond the work assigned in class. Ask instructors for study material. Read any materials you can find at your local library and online for information on civil engineering. Read reference books such as "The Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement" and the "Engineer-In-Training Reference Manual."

    • 3

Take extra courses, such as technical electives, and investigate career opportunities to help you decide whether to continue toward a more advanced degree in civil engineering. The civil engineering field has expanded to include bioengineering, rehabilitation, smart systems, space structures and other specialized fields.
