Principally located in the Rockhill neighborhood, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, or UMKC, is part of the larger University of Missouri system. UKMC is split into several distinct academic divisions, including a College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Law, a School of Pharmacy and the School of Biological Sciences. In addition, the college also offers a 6-year program in its School of Medicine. According to the university's figures, it has around 8,000 undergraduate and 5,400 postgraduate students on its books, though only a small minority live on campus.
Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regions, the Kansas Community College in Kansas City offers 2-year degrees in a wide range of courses. Among the Associate in Applied Science courses available are programs in accounting, computer engineering, nursing and respiratory care therapy, while Associate in Science courses include those in biology, business and chemistry. Students may be able to use Kansas Community College qualifications to transfer to 4-year programs at other institutions. Alongside the associate degrees, technical certificates are available in areas including fire investigation, homeland security, Web applications and welding technology.
The largest of the five Metropolitan Community Colleges, or MCCs, within the state of Missouri, the MCC Business and Technology institute was founded in Kansas City in 1995. Following its expansion in 2002, the facility offers certificate and degree programs in a range of specialist areas, including computing, engineering, environmental health and safety and cooling and refrigeration. The college offers courses that can be completed in fewer than 12 weeks and offers good links with local employers and help with accessing potential sources of tuition funding.
Founded in 1865, the Kansas City Art Institute, or KCAI, offers 4-year degrees in art and design. The private, independent institution offers a standard Bachelor of Fine Arts program, with students able to focus on a range of studio-based majors, including animation, ceramics, sculpture and printmaking. Ninety-five percent of KCAI students receive some sort of institutional scholarship, with the college able to offer help in finding and obtaining funding.
Situated in the center of Kansas City, Columbia College is geared toward helping military personnel and other working adults pursue higher education. The college offers a wide range of curse options, As well as associate, bachelor's and master's degrees, students can also take 8-week courses, with further flexibility offered by evening classes and online teaching. Among the subjects offered by Columbia College are degrees in history, American studies, business administration, psychology and management information systems.
