Knowing a foreign language is almost necessary in our modern world, especially at the rate globalization is spreading. Arabic, in particular, is of growing importance, with U.S. involvement in the Middle East and outsourcing to countries such as Egypt. If you wish to study Arabic at the university level and obtain a degree, there are many options open to you.
  1. Georgetown University

    • Georgetown University has an entire department dedicated to Arabic and Islamic studies and offers a Artium Baccalaureatus (A.B.) degree in Arabic, as well as a master's and Ph.D program. The A.B. in Arabic from Georgetown prepares students to converse in Arabic at all levels, including professionally and scholarly, by teaching students the history of the Arabic language, including culture, politics and literature.

      The A.B. in Arabic requires 120 credit hours and a minimum of 38 courses.

    University of California Los Angeles

    • The UCLA department of Near Eastern Languages & Cultures, NELC, offers a B.A. degree in Arabic, as well as a MA. The NELC defines the goal of its department as the study of the language, culture, and values of "an area that was the cradle of all civilization." Emphasizing research, the NELC works with other UCLA departments to provide opportunities for students to research in the area of their choosing.

      The B.A. degree in Arabic requires 14 core classes in the areas of Arabic language, history, culture and literature.

    University of Texas at Austin

    • The University of Texas at Austin offers a B.A., master's, and Ph.D in Arabic studies. The B.A. in Arabic Program at UT is an intense language program that teaches students to use Arabic at a high level in the first three years followed by Arabic courses on literature, culture, history and other areas. The program also requires students learn and practice a regional dialect as well as formal Arabic.

      A B.A. in Arabic from UT requires 26 upper-level Arabic hours and 18 in-residence hours.

    Michigan State University

    • Michigan State University offers a B.A. in Arabic. Studying Arabic at the University of Michigan prepares students to converse efficiently in every setting and provides insight into the history, culture, religion and modern life of the areas in which it is spoken. The Michigan State University requires 28 hours of Arabic-specific courses.
