Verify that the degree program is also available for an Associate of Science. Many A.A. degree programs are different from A.S. degree programs, but a few, such as human services and nursing, are available for either degree. For example, the A.S. degree prepares you take the NCLEX-RN licensure examination and work as a registered nurse; the A.A. degree prepares you to transfer to a four-year university and earn a bachelor's degree in nursing.
Pick a new degree program. If you aren't in a program that is also offered as an A.S. degree at College of Central Florida, you will have to pick a new major.
Compare degree requirements between your current A.A. degree program and the A.S. program of interest. Find out what courses are required for the A.S. degree. Some majors require similar or additional coursework. For example, to switch from an A.A. to an A.S. degree in nursing requires no additional classes. To find degree requirements, check out the "Advising Sheet" for the major program.
Make an appointment with an academic counselor. Inform the counselor of your intent to change degree types, and possibly programs. The academic counselor will go over your current transcript and figure out what classes you will need to complete the new A.S. degree. The adviser will switch your intended degree type and major on your records. If the program is competitive, you may need to apply to that program before being allowed to switch.
