How to Get an Associates Degree at Highline Community College

Highline Community College in Des Moines, Wash., offers associate's degrees and certifications in several disciplines. Once a student's application has been accepted to Highline Community College, they must enroll and pay for classes. Tuition varies based upon residency requirements. As of 2011, a Washington resident can expect to pay $87 per credit hour, while a nonresident is charged $100 per credit hour and international students are charged $259 per credit hour. Highline Community College offers on-location and distance-learning classes.

      Apply to Highline Community College via the online application on Highline.edu or by visiting Building 6 on campus. Complete the application, by providing your name, Social Security number, address and other contact information. Highline Community College does not require an admissions essay. Accompany your application with the $25.50 application fee.

      Schedule a COMPASS test so Highline Community College can evaluate your reading, writing and mathematical skills. This is necessary to determine your placement if you have no prior college experience. You do not need to take a COMPASS test if you have already taken college-level courses in these subjects at another institution. Provide Highline Community College with your official college transcripts from your previous institution.

      Read the course catalog and discover which degree program you wish to pursue. Meet your academic adviser by calling 206-878-3710 and register for classes. You may register through your adviser or at Highline.edu. Avoid registering for classes that do not fulfill your degree requirements.

      Purchase the books necessary for your classes. Books are available at the campus bookstore or online.

      Attend every class in which you are enrolled. If you must miss a class, contact your instructor before the class begins to advise him of your absence. Make up missed assignments after receiving permission from your instructor.

      Continue to enroll in classes that fit your degree plan as you complete each semester. Highline Community College requires students to complete between 67 and 74 credit hours to earn an associate's degree.
