The Colorado College music program focuses primarily on performance, music theory, music literature and composition. Academic course offerings place musical styles into their historical and cultural contexts. Technical classes and performance specializations are supported by small classes and a community approach to developing musicianship. Colorado State University, Pueblo, offers both a music performance major and a music education major. A comprehensive liberal arts elective curriculum supplements rigorous theory and performance-based degree tracks. Academic emphasis is placed on developing professionalism and business skills. Graduate study and education licensing are the goals for each program.
Both programs offer well-respected ensemble performance opportunities, including jazz, concert band and choir ensembles. Colorado College also emphasizes exploration of African, Caribbean and Asian music through ensemble work, and its Bowed Piano Ensemble enjoys an international reputation. Marching band, vocal and instrumental jazz ensembles, and a full chamber orchestra, are highlights of the Colorado State University program and draw audiences from around the state. Both colleges encourage student choice in elective ensemble work and offer campus-wide opportunities to audition and participate.
Both Colorado College and the Colorado State University, Pueblo, have award-winning faculties dedicated to both individual student achievement and the quality of the overall music program.
In the 2010-2011 academic year, Colorado State University tuition, room and board averaged between $13,000 and $20,000 per year, depending on state residency status, housing choice and meal plan choice. In the same year, study at Colorado College averaged just over $48,000 including room and board. These costs did not include books, transportation or instrument fees for the music program.
Both Colorado College and the University of Colorado, Pueblo, require a successful audition and letters of recommendation to enter their music degree programs. Non-music majors are permitted to participate in music program offerings as electives, with ensemble participation based on ability.
